If Leonardo DiCaprio were a woman, how would he approach dating and marriage?

Leonardo recently broke up with his 25-year old model girlfriend Camila. The key here is 25. He’s never dated anyone over 25. What’s up with that? Women already feel high pressure about aging and dating in Asia, where men seem to care particularly more about women’s age than anywhere else. Well, except for Leonardo DiCaprio. If there’s one thing that we could learn from Leonardo is this — he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it. If he were an ambitious woman, what would his dating and marriage strategy be?

My assumption here is that ambitious women, generally, want to keep pursuing the dreams while also starting a family. To succeed, timing is key. Here are three questions to consider when strategically thinking about ideal timing for dating and marriage:

  1. When am I at my peak demand in the dating market?: Leonardo seems to think that women are most attractive in early 20s. Average debut age for Asian girl band members is around 17 to 20 years old. Hollywood is well known for gender gaps where women get more roles before 30s while men get more in their 40s. In general, most men find younger women more attractive. Period. What this means to us women is we should take advantage of this fact and get into dating in early 20s. There will be plenty of fish to fish and we’ll always have the upper hand. Enjoy the blue ocean, and fish the top quality men to date when you’re young. It would be better to wait on marriage though for the reason below.

  2. Are we mentally, emotionally, and financially ready for marriage?: Marriage is no joke. It is hard work. Truth is you also need stable income to make marriage work. Most happy marriages I’ve seen are those where women marry when they’re older, because both partners are now more ready to embark on this journey. Even if you feel like you met “the one” in your early 20s, wait on tying the knot till you’re in late 20s. 20s is when we all become our full individual adult selves. Give some time to each other to explore and learn about the world and self, so that you can both be fully ready for a lifelong commitment.

  3. Do we want any kids?: Knowing whether you want to have a kid or not should be a big consideration when deciding on the timing for marriage. Biological clock has real implications. It impacts not only the maternal’s but also baby’s health. If you decide to not have a kid on your own, then biological timing can be ignored. If you do want to have a kid, it would be best to try to have one before 35. I gave birth to my second kid when I was 37, and didn’t realize I was considered having a ‘geriatric pregnancy’. Science community has given these 35+ moms the official ‘geriatric’ title due to increased pregnancy and birth complications (Thanks for ‘officially’ making me old!). After 35, it also gets more difficult to conceive. There are many ways to get pregnant with science’s help, but these are expensive and could be an emotional roller coaster ride. With kid in mind, late 20s’ and early 30s’ marriage is ideal, especially if you want more than one kid.

Capitalize on the high demand for dating in early 20s, tie the knot in late 20s or early 30s, and have a kid before 35, if having a kid is what you want. If Leonardo were a woman, this is what he would do. He probably will not date someone twice in age though. Just saying.
